A PCI bus extender kit permits a standard desktop PC to expand its available PCI slots or be used as a system master for control of a CompactPCI / PXI bus widely used for industrial applications in measurement, control and testing.

There are many older technology PCI bus extenders on the market today that can extend the PCI bus from a few feet to hundreds of feet by using custom wire or expensive fiber cables. They all work on the principal of converting a PCI parallel bus to a serial bus and back again to a PCI parallel bus on the opposite end. Many solutions require software drivers and cannot provide a full communication bandwidth even at 32 Bit / 33 MHz bus speeds.
